Breaking

Breaking describes the practice in multiple martial arts where a practitioner will perform a technique with wood or cinder as the target.

Break targets

  • Wood blocks
  • Cinder blocks

Types of breaks

Obstructive break

This is when there is an obstacle that is in the way of the practitioner.

Example: The practitioner wants to perform a flying side kick to a wooden target. A chair is placed in the way of the practitioner. They must now jump over the chair to perform the flying side kick and break the target.

Power break

A power break is when the practitioner breaks the following:

  • 3 or more standard or thicker wooden targets
  • Wooden bats
  • Cinder blocks
  • Etc

Speed break

A speed break is when a target is held with minimum resistance and the breaker must accelerate fast enough to break the target.

  • 1 thin wooden target held by a single hand
  • Dropping a board with one hand and breaking with the other hand while the board is in mid air.
